Ghanaian comedian SDK Dele has proposed that the 11 companies recently given mining licenses should face at least 10 years in prison. He argues that they should be treated the same as the protesters who were arrested, advocating for their swift apprehension.
"I just found out that 11 licenses for illegal mining were issued," he said, calling for justice similar to what was meted out to peaceful demonstrators. His comments were made on October 5 during the ongoing #StopGalamsey# and #FreeTheCitizens# protests, highlighted in a video by JoyNews.
SDK emphasized that those engaged in galamsey should not receive less than ten years; this would allow time for environmental recovery.
The three-day protest was organized by Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey to highlight the hazards of illegal mining and demand the release of arrested protesters.
